Shadows in my Cuboid

Just a few snaps showing the shadows I created within the cuboid.

By tilting and shifting the light I was using outside the cuboid I was able to manipulate the shadows.
Stretching and dragging them about, making them smaller and larger as I pleased.

The shadows were everywhere on the floor the walls of the cuboid.
From shadows I had been using on a single 2D plane to 5 and 6 Planes there is a whole new aspect to my work and I really find it interesting.

Making shadows within a space

Now I have tried a different approach.
Instead of creating shadows in the space around me I have created a way to make shows in a space that I control.
I have put together a large white cuboid. I made the walls using paper so I could easily cut into it.

Now as I was projecting the shadows before I am going to do the same but after I project the shadows onto a wall of the cuboid I will then cut out the spaces that are not darkened by shadow, allowing the light to pass through and give me another projection of the shadows within the space I have created.

Tape to paper

Paper straws, they give lovely definite lines.
I just wanted to use them to give my work a different feel. The straws are much slimmer than the tape almost half the width.

The Tape

To create these, I pulled lines of tape away from the glass and kept on stretching it until it snapped and flung back on itself. It is forced yet natural.

Moving on!!!

Right so the new forms created by messed up tape still make me want to do something different.
I've been working with shadows now for a bit so how do i make more shadows out of these small bits of tape?
Light is needed so why not use a projector.

So instead of looking at the small shadows within, I have no basically got a full shadow of the subject.

As always something more interesting needs to be done so its time to start layering.
At first I was making images using one angle or just a shadow form one bundle of tape, now I am using numerous angles and different pieces of tape painting one on top of another.

Balls and a mess of tape

So these lumps of tangled mess have a quality to them that really appeals to me.
The space within the folds creates shadows.
Its as if all my work no matter what way I go turns into shadows.
Everywhere i go on a daily basis I see shadows of some sort.

One door closes and another opens

So my idea of a ridiculous amount of tape line after line came to a halt, I saw a new path that I'd like to follow.
Whilst I was pulling down the tape that I had put up, a lot of it had merged together into new forms that seemed natural to a certain extent and it excited me.

The folds, the colors the twists and twirls..
Bang its like an explosion

Disaster strikes

So as I have already said I did forget my camera when I was working with the tape at first.
I came into college to find my work had been torn apart.
At first I was very upset that someone had done this to my work.
I had a lot of plans over the weekend to come in and start with on Monday morning.
When the first thing that is thrown at you is this, it becomes hard to know what to do.
Do I rip it down completely? Do I keep Going?

Back to the Tape

So I have gone through what I have done so far for the project to try and find an aspect that I'd like to follow up on and chase. I really felt that the work I did with tape to create swift fine lines that casted strong definite shadows a very strong idea.

I decided to to take the work I started in my bedroom to my work space at college.
The only problem was I forgot to bring my camera to record it from the start.
Or was this a problem?

Lines of Hot Glue

So I had great fun playing with a hot glue gun and laminating paper.
Thanks to some great peers, I learned its very easy to glue off of laminating paper without damaging the lines, swirls or shapes created.

Glue as it dries and hardens on laminating paper.

Once I pulled the glue off the pages I began to make balls with them. I just Squeezed them up and then let them develop into a semi natural state.

A creation within the palm of my hand.

Everything has to make a shadow. I find it interesting that the shadow of this form has a darker shade than the form itself. The glue is somewhat near transparent yet the shadow it creates is much much dark it's almost confusing.

Printing with Ropes

A big change from my days of tying knots and making lashings...
Here is the final products of what my printing created.

This is well over due.

I have a stock pile of work to be uploaded to my blog.
To any one that I promised frequent updates of new work to my blog I am very sorry.
I had misplaced my external hard drive with my images on it, but hey I found it today while I was looking for a CD. So it's back on track with this:

So after I tired to replicate my prints on a larger scale by painting them by hand, I didn't really like the feeling of my work being completely forced. An alternative was to create new prints using larger pieces of material e.g rope. I filled a container with watered down black paint and dipped lengths of into it and dropped them on a page then pressed them on to make the impression more defined.

I'll be honest, I expected there to be much stronger prints. But hey it's cool I still like my work.

Just keep on pushing.

Page still looks some what bare...

I think it kinda looks like tyre tracks??

Now I'm starting to like the piece more and more... Sometimes less is more but this time more is definitely more.. With each drop and print of the rope I made the page became more and more visually interesting.
